Family History

National Mining Museum Scotland is often contacted by people carrying out family research.

One of our volunteers has written the following booklet as a handy guide to starting to research your coal mining family history, what NMMS might be able to provide and what other good sources of information are out there.

Click here to download the booklet.

Although the Museum library does not hold employment records for miners, you may be able to find information about a family member if they were involved in mine management or were an official of the National Coal Board (NCB) or National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). National Coal Board employment records are currently held at Iron Mountain, Rumer Hill Industrial Estate, Rumer Hill Road, Cannock, WS11 8EX, tel. 0844 264 1486.
