WE ARE NOW OPEN!
We are now open to the public with a phased approach starting off with reduced hours over fewer days of the week. We will monitor the situation as we open up, survey our visitors and respond accordingly. Please see our Opening Hours for up to date information.
Over the last few months, we have been planning and preparing to open our doors to our visitors to ensure we have the correct safety measures in place to protect our visitors and our staff.
We’re Good to Go
We have acquired VisitBritain’s Good to Go accreditation. This Industry Standard mark means that National Mining Museum Scotland has followed government and industry Covid-19 guidelines, has a Risk Assessment in place and a process to maintain cleanliness and aid physical distancing.
Safety comes first and it is important that everyone follows the Scottish Government guidance to protect themselves and others. This means you must respect and adhere to the new guidelines and measures we have put in place at NMMS. As expected, your visit will feel a little different from normal but we hope you enjoy it. Moreover, we are delighted that you are interested in visiting NMMS to experience our exhibitions and new formatted tours and engage with your local heritage.
Please read all the guidance below before your visit. A pdf of our Visitor Charter is available to download here.
HERE’S WHAT WE’RE DOING:
ONLINE TICKETING: We have set up a new online ticketing system so that you can book in advance of your visit. We will make every effort to support our visitors and hope that you can use this system for entry to the museum.
SOCIAL DISTANCING MEASURES: When you arrive at reception you’ll see the social distancing queuing markers. Please use these to respect social distancing when waiting to enter.
TICKETS: Please have your ticket ready. Museum staff will then take your ticket and talk you through the safety measures in place during your visit.
REDUCED CAPACITY: We have reduced the number of people we are welcoming into the building to ensure you have enough space to enjoy the museum safely.
ONE-WAY SYSTEM: There will be a one-way route marked out for you to follow during your visit. Please follow the arrows as you make your way around the site.
SIGNAGE AND FLOOR MARKINGS: We have installed new safety signage and marked out social distancing at various points throughout museum.
SNEEZE SCREEN: We have installed safety screens at our reception, cafe and gift shop to protect our staff and customers.
MUSEUM STAFF SAFETY PROTOCOLS: Our team will be wearing face coverings and sometimes gloves. Museum staff will endeavour to keep a safe distance between you and your group, however, they will be happy to help with any questions you may have.
WASHING/SANITISING HANDS: Hand sanitiser stations are situated throughout the site, particularly at the entrance to each area/exhibition space. There are also hand washing facilities in our toilets, located on the ground floor in the cafe.
CARDS NOT CASH: Our online booking system is easy to use and we encourage you to book before visiting. Onsite, please use contactless payment where possible to reduce cash handling.
CLEANING: We already maintain the highest standard of hygiene on site, but now we’ve increased our regular cleaning regime of surfaces and touch points.
TOILETS: We have kept the toilets on the ground floor, adjacent to the café, open. Other toilets on the premises will not be accessible. Please ensure you are aware of the location of the toilets when you are on site.
CAFE: Our cafe is now open to visitors and the general public, serving hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, paninis, toasties and freshly baked cakes. Due to social distancing requirements there are only a limited number of tables available to sit-in but we also have a designated picnic area for visitors to use. Please pay attention to social distancing here. We are required to record your details for Track and Trace purposes.
GIFT SHOP: The shop will be open, with slightly reduced stock to help visitors see our products and discourage touching. We ask you only ‘lift and look’ if you wish to buy.
CAR PARK: The car park will be open as usual.
WHAT WE EXPECT FROM YOU:
If you’re showing any of the symptoms of Coronavirus or if you’ve been in contact with anyone that has had the virus in the last 14 days, please don’t visit.
In line with Scottish Government guidance, we are recommending that visitors wear masks – though we understand that this won’t be possible for everyone.
Please the hand sanitisers and hand washing facilities on site.
Please queue where indicated and follow the one-way system and guidance at all times.
Please maintain a safe distance between you and others.
