A Mine of Information!

Welcome to schools and home educators! The National Mining Museum Scotland re-opened on 20th August 2020, following Scottish Government guidelines, however, we are unable to accommodate group visits at this time. We are monitoring the situation closely and cannot wait to welcome schools and groups back as soon as possible!

Support

In the meantime, National Mining Museum Scotland is available to help support schools, home educators and community groups in their learning journeys. We are busy behind the scenes and will be updating this page regularly so please keep checking back for what we have on offer or please contact a member of our Education Team by emailing us at – education@nationalminingmuseum.com

Digital Learning Programme

1. Video call with an ex-miner

A free, live video call with one of our ex-miner tour guides! These calls are available for schools across Scotland. Find out about the dangerous gases miners faced and ask questions to find out more about life as a miner!

“We loved our video call! I was so impressed by the level of discussion it inspired in the children and that we could link in with STEM topics as well as local history. Would highly recommend” – quote from one of our classes who took part during the Midlothian Science Festival

2. Outdoor learning

While we cannot accommodate group visits on site, we can facilitate outdoor visits. We have a large outdoor space around our site and have new, short, activity sheets focusing on Health & Wellbeing (nature & nurture), Maths, or Social Studies (mining history). You are also welcome to use our outdoor space for your own art or outdoor learning.

These are self-led however, a pre-site visit with a member of the Education team is required for H&S and you must book in advance.

 3. Online Learning

Please visit our “Learning at Home with NMMS” page for free digital learning resources.

Coming Soon – Lesson Plans! We will be launching our lesson plans to be used with our Collections films soon.

4. Teacher Support

Are you covering the Victorians, your local mining history, geology or renewable energy? We offer digital CLPL/CPD support for all educational professionals and can tailor this to suit you. Sessions run over zoom or Microsoft teams.
