Welcome to our blog!

Hello! We are two interns on work placements at the Mining Museum as part of our Museum Studies Masters degree at the University of Leicester. This is our blog about our experiences.

Hi, I’m Rebecca. I’m originally from Leicester, and did my undergraduate degree in History at the University of Portsmouth. I have volunteered at several places including the Royal Navy Submarine Museum and RCAHMS. When the opportunity to do my placement at NMMS arose I was really excited. My Grandad was the GP in Newtongrange from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s, before the family moved to Edinburgh. I have been to the city many times, and I’ve also visited the museum and thoroughly enjoyed it. In my spare time I enjoy hill-walking, baking and, thanks to Morgan, pub quizzes.

Hi, I’m Morgan. I’m originally from London, but before doing the course at Leicester, I spent eight years in Montreal where I did my degree in History and worked in publishing. I wanted to do my placement at NMMS because I’m interested in mining and industrial history. My parents met at a fundraiser for striking miners in 1985 and I previously volunteered at the Cambridge Museum of Technology, an industrial history museum. When I’m not working or studying, I enjoy running, pub quizzes, board games, trying new craft beers, and cuddling my cat Bean.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be updating this page, giving an idea of what we are up to and our favourite objects.
